Warning: Graphic images. What exactly is Lasik? What does it do to my corneas?

Lasik is fast becoming a household name. Lasik has quickly become the number one choice for eye surgery patients because of the fast recovery time and fewer side effects and other complications than with other kinds of vision correction. In fact most Lasik patients notice a noteworthy enhancement in their vision soon after surgery. Lasik removes tissues within the cornea to treat low to high levels of myopia, far-sightedness and astigmatism.

But not all people are good Lasik eye surgery candidates. Just because a few people had successful surgeries does not mean that every individual has the capability to cope with it. Eye surgery does not pledge the same consequences for everyone.

There are a few general qualifications to consider before someone is eligible for LASIK eye surgery:

  1. Candidate’s eyes should be considered healthy enough to meet the criteria for Lasik.
  2. Most females who are pregnant are not recommended to have this operation done.
  3. The minimum age requirement is 18-21, but there is no upper age limits to have Lasik eye surgery.
  4. A person’s corrective lens prescription should be stable one year prior to qualify for this surgery.
  5. Some health circumstances like rheumatoid arthritis and immune disorders can also disqualify you from seeking Lasik eye surgery.

Lasik Surgery - LASIK combines meticulousness of the Excimer laser with a flap process that exemplifies ALK procedures.

  1.
    • Elimination of corneal surface is not obligatory and consequently, postoperative sting is significantly reduced compared to PRK.
    • Postoperative visual acuity is improved within a few days instead of weeks like other forms of corrective surgery
    • There is not as much corneal scarring in the long-term, less alteration due to healing and as a result superior stability of the correction.

Lasik Surgery advances the uncorrected vision for distance - Nearly all patients expect to achieve 20/40 vision, which most states consider good enough to drive without having to wear contacts or glasses, and some can expect to achieve 20/20 vision. On the other hand, again, there are no assurances that you will have faultless vision.

LASIK to Treat You

  • To treat myopic eye, the cornea is trodden by eradicating the tissue from the hub of the cornea. This helps the point of focus from in front of the retina on retina.
  • To treat foresight, the cornea is made sheerer by removing the tissue from the ocular zone of cornea. This will move the point of focus from behind to a more straightforward position on the retina.
  • To treat astigmatism, the cornea is made more spherical in shape. This assists in eliminating the multiple focusing points inside the eye to one point on retina.

Effects of Lasik

The effects of this surgery are permanent. But, it is still important to realize that the eye can change internally. That is why most doctors recommend having this surgery done after the major eye changes have already occurred. Daily activities can be immediately resumed after the surgery is completed, but most doctors prefer that patients wear protective glasses for at least one month after the eye surgery. But some activities, such as sports and swimming are recommended by most doctors to be avoided for several weeks because due to the vulnerable nature of the post operative cornea.
