- Lasik Eye Surgery Complications

- What is Lasik? What does it do to my corneas?

The term ‘Lasik’ stands for Laser assisted in situ keratomileusis which is defined as reshaping of the cornea by applying laser on corneal tissue under corneal flap. The laser utilized in this procedure is excimer laser which is highly effective to treat poor vision, refractive errors and other eyesight disorders. Like all other surgical methods, LASIK surgery also involves certain risk and complications that any LASIK patient should be aware of before making the final decision to consent to LASIK. To minimize surgical risks, side affects and complications in the LASIK practice of your choice, you need to learn everything you can about the procedure and how to gain maximum benefits and results from this refractive surgery while minimizing the risk of a life altering disaster.

1. Is LASIK surgery right for you?
It is very important to have good knowledge of your case and other factors like age, laser type suitable for your treatment, refractive error and other baseline information. All these factors clearly determine your individual condition and can determine if you are right for LASIK eye surgery. Some kinds of laser treatments are not recommendable for everyone, and the same is true of LASIK.

2. Equipment flaws
The results of LASIK depend to a large extent on the equipment and apparatus used to perform the surgery. A mere carelessness on the part of surgeon or use of inadequate equipment can result in harsh failures and damage beyond repair. The whole procedure involves the exposing of delicate corneal tissue and reshaping of the cornea with an excimer laser which is then immediately covered with a thin corneal flap which is created in the eye with the help of a microkeratome (cutting instrument). Any minimal delays or errors in cutting and reshaping of cornea or use of false laser can cause the operation to go out of kilter. Therefore always choose a medical institution where the latest and most advanced surgical equipment is available.

3. Beware – Find the right surgeon
Finding a right surgeon who can exactly work up to your expectations is another scary business to deal with. Your surgeon must clearly understand the nature of your eye sight problem and only after careful examination he must prescribe a surgical solution. He should make you aware in advance of all the possible outcomes of the refractive surgery. It is highly recommended to choose an experienced, well reputed and highly qualified doctor for the procedure. The one who is familiar with the use of latest technology, advanced surgical methods and is readily available after surgery in case of any complications.

4. Avoid contact lenses and cosmetics before surgery
To avoid any chances of surgical errors and mistakes you must stop wearing contact lenses sufficient time before initial evaluation of your eye condition by your doctor. Different types of contact lenses affect the shape of your cornea differently even after you have stopped using them. To declare you suitable for LASIK, primary measurement of your corneal tissue is taken to determine that how much corneal tissue is to be removed or reshaped during surgery. Not discarding the use of contact lenses may result in incorrect measurement thus leading to a poor and inaccurate surgical plan. Initial evaluation is required to be taken again before a week time of LASIK surgery to confirm that there is not any insignificant change noticed in the measurement. You should also stop using cosmetics like facial creams, perfumes and lotions a day or two before surgery because these products along with eye rubble can cause severe infection.

5. After Surgery Risks
It takes normally three to six months to achieve the stability of vision and comprehensible results of LASIK treatment. After surgery you may suffer a slight itchiness, haziness, blurriness and minute pain followed by dry eyes, complexity in driving at night, regression, under correction or over correction. With any of these symptoms you must immediately consult your doctor for any additional treatment if required. But in most cases LASIK eye surgery is the safest and fastest method to acquire the desired results of improved vision when performed by an experienced LASIK specialist.
